Original full red cloth in vgc, with light rubbing to extremities of spine, along spine hinges and to lower outer corners of boards; slightly heavier wear to cloth over upper outer corner of front board only; minor staining to rear board. This copy formerly owned by notable American mundane astrologer and astrological magazine editor Alma Crawford Graning, with her characterful pictorial bookplate adhered to front paste-down. Ffep with faint stamp to lower margin and plain-pencilled inventory number to upper margin. Photographic plates of the author, his colleague Constance Sharp, and convicted murderers Edith Thompson and Frederick Bywater, remain in excellent condition. No permanent internal markings found. A few short internal tears to rear inner paper hinge. Foxing to endpapers, but no significant faults found. A very good copy of the first edition, given added historical value and character by its history of ownership by Alma Crawford Graning and her bookplate. |
