The Astrolearn bookshop is temporarily closed for 14 days Friday December 13th to Thursday December 26th inclusive. This is because of the unreliability of the Christmas post and very high volumes of writing and editing work over this period. Please check back on Friday December 27th, when the shop will reopen and this notice will be removed.
W. J. Simmonite – The Prognostic Astronomer, or Horary Astrology, c. 1851
£275.00
Description
hb | Simmonite, W. J. | The Prognostic Astronomer, or Horary Astrology: Containing an Improved Method of Solving the Thousand Inquiries Relative to Futurity | Very early | Simpkin, Marshall, & Co., London | n.d. | £275 | xviii + 196. This appears to be the original undated Simpkin and Marshall edition of 1851 (the first London edition, after the very rare original Leeds edition the same year). The type and printing notices exactly match the reference copy to hand in all details. The binding and title label to the front board may, however, be a slightly later variant form issued by the publisher. It reads ‘Dr. Simmonite’s Prognostic Astronomer – Price 5s’ whereas the one on the reference copy reads ‘Prognostic Astronomy or Horary Astrology; by Dr. W. J. Simmonite – Price Five Shillings’ | Original quarter pebbled green cloth with plain boards bearing publisher’s title label. Separation to cloth down upper and central portions of front hinge. Underlying binding strong. Delayering to outer corners of boards. Short tear to top edge of rear board; and a few minor ink stains to same. Front paste-down with period John Story bookshop advertisement deduced to date from 1879 or 1880 pasted down over it; his address printed on it has been updated in a small black-inked correction. Small chip lost from blank upper outer corner of leaf comprising pp. iii-iv. Three pages of the preface lightly stained, as though left open in a sooty room long ago. Most pages very clean. Inked marginal bracket to p. 167. Plain-pencilled annotation to p. 177. Lower outer corner of leaf comprising pp. 187-8 cut too large for book block and correspondingly creased. Plain-pencilled and some purple-pencilled annotations to rear endpapers, with interesting notes about the rules for the pre-natal epoch and for calculating the Part of Fortune. A very good antiquarian original. |
