With Set of Tables 2nd, 2nd printing Nichols & CO., 34 Hart Street, W.C., London 1909 £105 The 2nd printing of the definitive ‘Revised & Enlarged’ edition, after the first thus of 1903, which was also published by Nichols & Co.. Original maroon full cloth in vgc+ condition, with blind-stamped bordering to both boards, and gilt titling to spine still remarkably strong. Light wear to extremities of spine and outer corners of boards. Light foxing to endpapers. Front inner paper hinge slightly cracked, but webbing holding. Occasional pertinent marginal annotations by a former owner, in a mixture of English and French – mostly in plain pencil, but a few in black ink from pp. 134-148. Trace of black-inked underlining to p. 131. Innocuous turquoise-inked annotations to two pages of tables in the appendix; and blue-inked annotations to lower margin of final printed page. Laid in, a sheet of calculations in an old French blue-inked hand relating to the Ayanamsha. A unique and externally very well-conserved copy of this rare and desirable early edition, whose annotations are of considerable scholarly interest.
