The Astrolearn bookshop is temporarily closed for 14 days Friday December 13th to Thursday December 26th inclusive. This is because of the unreliability of the Christmas post and very high volumes of writing and editing work over this period. Please check back on Friday December 27th, when the shop will reopen and this notice will be removed.

P. A. Graves – Evolution and Reproduction of the Human Race 1889

£75.00

Description

pb Graves, P. A. Evolution and Reproduction of the Human Race. – Man Produced by Stellar Magnetism – Diseases and their Causes Explained… 1st No publisher stated, San Francisco, California 1889 £75 138pp. A very rare book, with no printed copies recorded on Worldcat. Presumed self-published by the author. Author styles himself ‘Prof. of Astrology’ to title page, and there are significant astrological elements to the broadly discursive content of this book Original red cloth-covered card covers in good condition for age, with 8mm tear to top of front spine hinge, some rippling, and some discoloration, as though from a past water spill. Fine symbolic gilt illustration and titling to front cover remains strong and bright and the most attractive feature of the book. Internally, the original staples supporting the underlying binding are very rusty; paper from the inside of the front cover has transferred to the ffep, leaving them both looking untidy, title page is chipped and torn at lower and inner margins, and quite creased in places; and the connection between it and the following leaf is completely split. Remaining prefatory pages and main pages to p. 48 together but disbound; pp. 97-136 together but disbound. Two green-inked dashes to outer margin of p. 136. Otherwise only plain-pencilled marginal marks (which are quite frequent) found. A few short tears to some page-edges. Creasing towards lower outer corners of later pages. A poor copy of this very scarce book, but complete and retains an attractive gilt cover design. Would make a worthy conservation project for a book conservator
