The Astrolearn bookshop is temporarily closed for 14 days Friday December 13th to Thursday December 26th inclusive. This is because of the unreliability of the Christmas post and very high volumes of writing and editing work over this period. Please check back on Friday December 27th, when the shop will reopen and this notice will be removed.
Llewellyn George – Choice Collection of Valuable Extracts from the Works of the Master Astrologers 1915
£50.00
Description
pb | George, Llewellyn | A Choice Collection of Valuable Extracts from the Works of the Master Astrologers | 1st, presumed | Llewellyn Publishing Company, Portland, Oregon | n.d. | £50 | 80pp + [7 pages of advertisements]. Library records give 1915 for the first edition. The publisher had moved to Los Angeles by November 1920. All the publisher’s advertising at the back of this printing is addressed in Portland, so this printing must predate the move to L. A.. This copy lacks the original printed covers and therefore also the title and T.O.C., which were integral to the front cover. Cited sources include C. Heydon Junior (1792); Zadkiel (1842); Cardan; Pseudo-Ptolemy; the Rev. John Butler (1669); Ptolemy; and John Gadbury | Early custom plain brown paper covers in fair condition, with chipping and internal tears to portions of fragile spine paper, especially at lowest 3 cm and top cm; rear cover relatively weakly attached. It is not clear why this copy is not bound in printed covers. Internally poor, with all pages present and securely bound, but approximately 60-70% of every leaf browned from past damp-exposure, with occasional traces of rubbing to some later lower outer corners where leaves had become stuck together and had to be prized apart, far from text. There should be eight pages of advertisements, but the final leaf of advertisements has been glued down to the inside of the custom rear cover, obscuring the verso. Nonetheless, all the main text is present and clear to read even through the browned paper, together with 7 of the 8 pages of advertisements. A rather sorry-looking but complete copy of the original printing of one of Llewellyn George’s rarest books. Not an ideal collector’s copy, but a bargain rare book that remains of interest for the historical record and fascinating insights into the notable American author’s favourite excerpts from historical astrological sources, probably as found in his friend and colleague L. H. Weston’s private astrological library. Price factors in faults. |
