Ltd., 10 & 11 Red Lion Court, Fleet Street, E.C.4, London 1924 £125 The true first edition of Carter’s first book, and the only one to bear this form of the title. It is extremely uncommon, and a valuable collector’s item in any condition. Original full red cloth boards in vgc+ condition for age, with light fraying to foot of front spine hinge, light wear to cloth over most outer corners of boards, slight bowing to boards, and a little peripheral mottling and staining to boards. Gilt titling to front board somewhat faded as usual; gilt to spine has perished, but titling still clear to read. Book solidly bound throughout. Early owner’s coloured-pencilled signature to ffep. Traces of creasing to lower inner corners of preliminary leaves. Faint plain-pencilled tick to p. 10; faint plain-pencilled word added at end of paragraph on p. 12. Occasional traces of foxing or similar staining, but a very clean, bright copy for its age, with no permanent markings to any printed page. 5mm tear, with minor chipping, to outer edge of leaf comprising pp. 29-30, far from text, but no other faults found. Overall, an excellent copy of the rare first edition, whose boards seldom survive intact.
