It is extremely uncommon, and a valuable collector’s item in any condition. | Original full red cloth boards with gilt titling to front board, professionally rebacked with cloth of a closely matching type and colour, with the original cloth spine panel bearing the titling laid down on the new cloth spine. The aesthetic effect, while not seamless, is very acceptable. The original boards are in vgc- condiiton, with the cloth worn from their inner and outer corners, but the front and rear boards free from any obvious blemishes, and the gilt titling to the front board is intact and clear. The inner margins of both boards are slightly darkened; and the original cloth backing to the title label to the spine is also darkened; the spine titling has lost its gilt but remains legible. Endpapers toned. Internal pages remain clean, fresh and bright, and free from permanent markings. The joins between some successive page gatherings are very slightly strained but still strong for their age. Externally vgc-; internally near-fine; overall, this rates as a solid vgc rebacked copy of the rare first edition. |
