The Astrolearn bookshop is temporarily closed for 14 days Friday December 13th to Thursday December 26th inclusive. This is because of the unreliability of the Christmas post and very high volumes of writing and editing work over this period. Please check back on Friday December 27th, when the shop will reopen and this notice will be removed.

Alfred Barley – The Rationale of Astrology 1905

£37.50

Description

hb Barley, Alfred [Astrological Manuals – Introductory:] The Rationale of Astrology, with an additional chapter by Alan Leo on the Education of Children in the Light of Astrology 1st 9, Lyncroft Gardens, West Hampstead, N.W., London n.d. £37.50 [vi] + 112 + xix pages. The true first edition, dated by deposit library records to 1905. This is supported by the advertising to the rear for Modern Astrology New Series, Volume 2, which corresponds to the year 1905. In all later editions, it was renumbered as No. 10 in the series, renamed ‘What do we Mean by Astrology?’, and shortened to 96 pages. Original brown cloth in vgc- condition for age, with only light rubbing to extremities of spine and lower outer corners of boards; upper margin of front board mottled and relatively discoloured; a little white-staining towards foot of spine and adjacent area of inner margin of rear board. These minor cosmetic issues aside, a very good copy. Interesting old bookplate of an early-20th-century Dutch astrological organisation to front paste-down has been hand-filled in blue ink representing the title, author and a few other details, with the organisation’s original name partly struck out and a revised one advised in a footnote. Foreword leaf creased to lower outer corner. Quite a number of pages with plain-pencilled marginalia and related underlinings, all fairly faint and inoffensive and could be erased. No permanent markings found to any printed page; overall, a very good antiquarian copy of the true first edition
