The Astrolearn bookshop is temporarily closed for 14 days Friday December 13th to Thursday December 26th inclusive. This is because of the unreliability of the Christmas post and very high volumes of writing and editing work over this period. Please check back on Friday December 27th, when the shop will reopen and this notice will be removed.

hb | Leo, Alan | The Progressed Horoscope: A Sequel to How to Judge a Nativity, Wherein the Progression of the Horoscope Is Exhaustively Considered, Both in Principle and in Practice, including also A Full Delineation of Each and Every Possible Progressed Aspect, With Its Influence on Character and Destiny, the Effect of Transits, etc.[;] To which is added “The Art and Practice of Directing,” a Complete Treatise on Primary Directions, by Heinrich Däath | 1st | L. N. Fowler & Co., 7, Imperial Arcade, Ludgate Circus, E.C. 4, London | 1906 | £65 | First edition in [x] + 316 pages + 8 pages of advertisements. This copy in its second-state binding (after 1908 but before 1913), without the blind-stamped bordering and florets to the boards that attended the earliest bindings | Original vertically ribbed full green cloth in vgc for age, with trace of fraying to cloth at bottom 3mm of front spine hinge, otherwise moderate rubbing to extremities of spine; wear to cloth over lower outer corners of boards; and light wear to upper outer corners. Gilt titling to front board and spine nearly all still bright and strong; gilt rule at spine ends only partly faded. A little white spatter-staining to spine, as though someone was painting in the room nearby; and traces of similar staining to front board. Top edge of page block browned; other page edges somewhat browned and foxed. Ffep with charming vintage finely printed notice of presentation to early owner from the Society of Spiritualists, Southend-on-Sea, dated January 1913. Title page with remains of removed label under printed date. Early pages and last few leaves have foxing, but it’s a very clean copy internally, with one accidental blue-pencil mark noted towards the lower outer margin of p. 177, inoffensively crossing a little text, but no other permanent markings or faults found to any printed page. Rear paste-down with vintage newspaper cutting regarding a casting of ‘The Prince’s horoscope’ by Belle Bart. Overall, a very good copy of the first edition with added character from the presentation notice and press clipping that makes it unique and full of vintage charm. |
