Description
hb | Leo, Alan | Astrology for All, Part I: Individual and Personal Characteristics as Represented by the Sun and Moon (“Astrology Without Calculations”) | 3rd | The Office of “Modern Astrology,” 9, Lyncroft Gardens, West Hampstead, N.W., London | 1908 | £45 | [p. iv] + [1] + [2] + [pp. iii-x] + 253 + [35 pages of tables] + [3 pages of advertisements]. Revised from the second edition of 1904 but with near-identical page count. In his Preface to this edition, Leo explains: ‘the few alterations that have been made allow the paging… to remain as before’ | Original full green ribbed cloth in good antiquarian condition for its age, with gilt titling to front board and spine still bright and strong; blind-stamped bordering with decorative corner florets still visible to both boards. Cloth is worn from lower inner and outer corners of boards and upper inner corner of rear board, frayed to parts of foot of spine and top of front spine hinge, and moderately rubbed along spine hinges and parts of edges of boards. Light rippling to some areas of cloth over boards and spine, and a few old stains to boards. Ffep with charming vintage bookplate of the original owner with an added symbolic quotation printed upon it, and a few plain-pencilled notes. Her identity as the original owner is apparent in a hand-inked note of presentation to her from her sister, dated 1909, on the rear free endpaper, which has been written upside down by mistake. A few plain-pencilled notes and marks to first contents page, and some plain-pencilled marginalia to main text pages, which are free from permanent markings. Title page with vintage “Modern Astrology” address sticker to lower margin. The internal binding of this large and heavy book, while somewhat fragile (please handle with care in use, preferably reading on a flat surface such as a table or desk), is now sound, having been professionally strengthened at the gutters in several places with Tyvek acid-free book hinge repair tape, which does not affect any printed text. A few gutters that exhibit only a little partial separation have been left alone as this was felt to be the best thing to do in terms of conserving the look of the book as far as possible, but all the seriously affected ones have been repaired, including the rear inner paper hinge (between rear fep and rear paste-down). Toning to narrow strips of inner margins of pp. 24-5 and pp. 106-7 where narrow wooden sticks were formerly inserted as bookmarks. Crease across upper outer margin of leaf comprising pp. 65-6. Overall, a good+ sympathetically repaired, complete and authentic original copy of a very early edition of this book, representing Leo’s vision for it in 1908, free from permanent markings to its pages, and with added charm thanks to the two traces of its early history in the hands of ostensibly mutually affectionate sisters |
