[1] The reason for this incongruous-seeming leap in volume number is not yet clear, but it may have to do with a decision to revert to the numbering system devised for an early incarnation of the journal (believed to have been launched in 1923) before that numbering was reset at the launch of ‘The Torch Monthly’. However, the fact of the July 1931 issue being labelling Volume 9 No. 1 and not Volume 8 No. 5 further confuses the picture, and would appear to suggest that a temporary move to half-year volumes was part of the story at this point in time
