Binding format and presentation notes:

• All issues held as original very small-format (but thick) separate issues.
• All from 1845 to 1875 hardbound. Mostly in different designs and colours of quarter leather with paper-covered boards. Most with gilt print to spins; some with raised bands. 1854 issue in full leather with gilt bordering to boards and rule to spine.
• All from 1876 to 1900 in paper covers. String-bound in original paper covers except where otherwise indicated in the individual year descriptions (two are rebound; one has no covers).

 

[1] For paginating the paginated years of this title, I have not checked absolutely every page for continuity, a task that would have been relentlessly tedious with so many similar volumes at hand, but I have flicked through to the extent of being able to ascertain the core pagination start and end points showing the extent of content as compared with the extent of advertising. For the unpaginated years, I have roughly estimated page count by examining the thickness of the book – but this is subject to considerable inaccuracy.

[2] In view of the radically different title this early year, I cannot definitively demonstrate that it is the same publication, although it has in common with later issues typography, the name and address of one of the publishers listed, and the ‘Almanach journalier’ part of the subtitle. And it was included in the same collection as the rest as part of a single large lot.

[4] The strange-looking hopping around by the publisher between adjacent addresses is not without parellel and would tend to suggest the hiring or ownership of offices in an extended building comprising two official street addresses over a very long period of time, perhaps with internal reorganisation of office space leading to changes of preferred entrance at different times

[8] This copy has been rebound by a former owner in an outwardly similar colour of paper to the original binding, with the original title labels from the front cover and spine pasted over the top. The insides of the covers resemble ruled file paper; and the advertisements present on the original covers have all been lost. The partial adhesion of the front cover to the following leaf appears the result of carelessness with glue at the time of rebinding – unless it was deliberate.
