Francis, James Jason ‘The New English Astrological Thesaurus’ CSA Press, Lakemont, Georgia, 1977
[0] 1865-1945, said to have been a member of a wealthy Jewish banking family based in Vienna
[1] The original is identified as having been in French, but no comparable French title credited to the author can be traced in French library records. It is suspected of having taken the form of magazine articles. Florisoone wrote a number of other articles in French on the ancient history of astrology that are listed in French library records
[2] The publication is billed as posthumous for Piobb, who is said to have completed his translation in 1910.
[3] It is not apparent whether there are any material differences in the paper or binding as compared with the rest of the edition, whose size is unknown. The only apparent distinction is the limitation page at the end.
[3a] A reprint, probably from the 1970s or early 1980s, of the original edition of 1940. Two editions of the Dorothy Hughes reprint are in circulation, the other taking the form of an oversized folder, which is presumed to be the earlier of the two because it was more expensively produced.
[3b] Library records show 1902
[4] Pseud. of Abbé Nicoullaud
[4a] An unknown author referred to in the masculine third person. He references Frank Earl Ormsby as the source of a ‘necessary’… ‘mechanical chart’
[4b] Ostensibly the original, unique manuscript of an unpublished work following the heliocentric method of astrology as practised in its time. Some sections are written on pieces of paper that have been pasted in onto the book over the top of the original paper, indicating the author’s ongoing revision and correction of his own work. The contents of the main astrological part of the work, which runs to p. 201, include delineations of the planets to Neptune in the twelve houses and of the Earth in the twelve signs, in addition to general sketches of the twelve houses and of the planets, and note-form delineations of a small number of interplanetary aspects. The remainder of the volume treats briefly of subjects as diverse as physiognomy, graphology, chronology, magic mirrors, chiromancy, cartomancy, calendars, astro-meteorology, and occult symbols
[4c] This is headed Churchyard Prophecy and is stated in a pencilled note to be from the Daily Sketch for July 28, [19]44
[4d] Retyped from MS. Sloane 99 in the British Library, edited to modernise spelling and render some Latin tags in English. The editor has provided 330 of her own explicatory footnotes. She notes that three other, variant manuscripts of Simon Forman’s work, MS. Ashmole 403, 363 and 389, are held at the Bodleian Library, all dated to between 1596 and 1611. These have yet to be edited for print
[5] Presumed 1994 or soon after
[5a] A series of publications collectively edited at this time by Marco Pasi, assisted by an editorial board of 3 and an advisory board of 8
[5b] The contents comprise 18 essays by different scholars, divided into Part 1: Middle Ages and Early Modernity, and Part 2: Modernity and Postmodernity. The essays include one entitled ‘Signs in the Sky: The Tobol’sk Chronicle and Celestial Divination in Russia’, one on Agrippa, and one on Ficino
[6] The core of this book is a set of potted planetary transit delineations. The “Astroscop” referred to in the title appears from the definition at the back of the book to be a rotating chart device of some kind sold separately by the publisher (which is primarily responsible for the broad-based occult interest magazine “Das Neue Zeitalter”). Perhaps someone who has used one can provide more detail on it for a future edition
[6a] A pseudonym for British occultist Violet M. Firth, 1890-1946
[6b] After the original printing of the stated fourth edition, in 1967, and the first paperback edition thereof in 1974. Worldcat refers to the 1967 edition as a pseudo-fourth edition, implying that it was in fact just the unchanged fourth printing of the original edition of 1924, which was published by Rider
[6c] Originally published by Aquarian Press, London and Weiser, New York, in 1956, although these credits are not retained in this edition
[7] A facsimile reprint of the original published by Foster’s Weather Bureau, 1625½ North Capitol Street, Washington, D.C., itself undated, but with a former owners’s pale stamp dated 1914 showing through on the facsimile, indicating that it must be older than this at least
[8] The third printing, in large format card covers. Compiled and Programmed by Rique Pottenger, and published by ACS Publications, 5521 Ruffin Road, San Diego, California, July 2001. After the original printing of March 1997 and secnod of May 2000
[9] A ten-page printed article bearing a copyright date of 1983 to the footer. Bound by a single staple at one corner
[10] This article comprises four single-sided leaves and is dated April 4, 2009. Also bound by a single staple at one corner
[11] As titled or (for the numbered parts) tab-labelled
[12] Dated 1982 in print, this being the year of its original publication; but this copy was issued in 2009 and is hand-dated thus by author to p. ii
[13] The first edition is given as 1933, with a further reprint in 1945
