Firmicus Maternus – see also under Kelber, Chr.; Rinaldi, Michele; and Wikström, Tage, below
[0a] A series of publications collectively edited at this time by Klaus Herbers, in collaboration with Karl Acham, Günther Binding, Egon Boschiof, Wolfgang Brückner, Kurt Düwell, Helmut Neuhaus, Gustav Adolf Lehmann and Michael Schilling
[0b] A collection of ten scholarly essays on the mantic and prognostic sciences in the middle ages. Topics include medical prognoses, astrological prognoses, dreams and weather forecasting. Charles Burnett contributes one of the most specifically astrologically relevant essays
[1] This work contains printed dates of birth for fewer than 2,000 people despite its name, but additionally graphically summarises research into the distribution of Sun signs across several professional groups, and one defined by public renown, together amounting to over 47,000 individuals
[2] Holder of a Ph.D. from E.T.H. Zürich; a professor of theoretical physics at the University of Basel
[3] An extended translation of the original German edition, with the addition of two new sections by the author
[4] An early pseudonym of Marc Edmund Jones, as revealed in some of his later books. The typography is not entirely clear, but D.D. is my best guess for the second title, although one or both characters could equally be an O.
[5] A further note reads “This Monograph is not for sale, nor for general distribution”.
[5a] A Spanish translation of ‘Natal Charting’, q. v. below
[5b] After the original Aquarian edition of 1981, q. v. above
[6] Dated 1986, but this might relate only to the first printing
[7] A series of publications edited by T. Abusch, M. J. Geller, Th. P. J. van den Hout, S. M. Haul and F. A. M. Wiggermann
[8] This reset edition edition claims to have been corrected from the Noyes Press edition of Bram’s translation by David McCann, with reference to the Teubner Latin source text.
[9] A straight-forward monochrome facsimile reprint of the original 1975 edition of Bram’s translation, q. v. above
[10] A very long-running series of critical editions of ancient Greek and Latin texts
[11] A critical edition of the Latin text of Books 1-4 of Firmicus Maternus’ “Mathesis”, reprinted from the edition of 1897
[12] An added note to this volume reads: “In Operis Societatem Assumpto K. Ziegler”
[13] A critical edition of the Latin text of Books 5-8 of Firmicus Maternus’ “Mathesis”, reprinted from the edition of 1913, with new addenda by K. Ziegler. The main text fills pp. 1-361, with lengthy indices occupying pp. [362]-546, and the addenda accounting for the final pages.
[14] A German translation of the full eight books of the Mathesis, preceding the first English translation by 48 years. With separate title pages for 1. Lieferung (Liber II), 2. Lieferung (Liber III), 3. Lieferung (Liber IV), and 4. Lieferung (Liber V./VI./VII./VIII.), each with the same publication details as the overall vol. title page but with the addition of ‘Buchhandlung’ before ‘Hermann’. It would appear that Liber I was issued last of all at the time of publication of this hardbound volume, although it is found at the beginning, having been preceded by four separate issues comprising the later books as shown
[15] Translated chiefly from the Teubner edition of Kroll, Skutsch and Ziegler (1968 printing), q. v. above, but also with reference to microfilms of most of the extant source manuscripts. Holden notes that he had been working on translating the work since 4th April 1954, giving it a total gestation time of 57 years before it came to be published, still during his lifetime
[16] The editor notes that Firmicus Maternus wrote the Mathesis in 337 (A.D.).
[17] Despite the existence of the Teubner edition, this three-volume edition published by Les Belles Lettres is no mere translation of that, but rather a wholly fresh attempt at establishing a critical edition of the Latin source text from the original manuscripts. Every page of source text is presented alongside a facing English translation, and the facing pages are numbered the same, thus the pagination of the main parts of each volume consists of an ascending series of double-page spreads, and the total number of pages is twice the number indicated for these sections.
[18] The date of the original printing of this edition is given as 1992.
[19] The date of the original printing of this edition is given as 1992.
[20] The date of the original printing of this edition is given as 1997.
[21] No library records can be found for this uncredited German edition of the fourth book only of the Mathesis. It is suspected from its appearance of being a hand-typed private translation. It came from the same source and is presented in a binding matching that used for the Rudolf Fischer price list of 1996 and can reasonably be presumed therefore to have been bound up as seen in the 1990s. But the paper appears decades older, and I suspect a mid-20th century date for the translation itself
