[1] This is more than a simple translation, being supplemented by Privat’s own extensive original work on aspects to Pluto, comprising leaves 195-303 of the volume. The volume would appear to have been privately issued in small quantities, since there is no evidence of formal publication
[2] Deduced as 1941 from an internal reference to the date of the writing of a particular page
[3] Leaf 148 is missing, and should have comprised the central part of Carter’s text on the inharmonious aspects of Mars and Jupiter. It would appear to have been carelessly overlooked at the time of binding, since there is no evidence of any looseness in the binding of this volume
[4] It is largely a replica of the title leaf and following table of contents leaf, but without the printing details on the verso of the title page, and with an added note after the table of contents: “To be published Nov. 10th, 1930 – Cloth 4/6 net. Postage 4d.” The outer edges of the flyer are a bit torn
[5] A reprint of the edition first published by L.N. Fowler & Co. in 1951
[6] Appears a straight-forward facsimile-based reprint of the original edition, q. v. above
[7] Presumed 1937
[8] Retitled from the original 1924 edition “A Concise Encyclopaedia of Psychological Astrology”, q. v. above. In his foreword to this second edition, the author notes that he has added “a considerable amount of fresh matter, including descriptions of the astrological indications of “several important diseases” and six illustrative horoscopes. He has also rewritten and “considerably amplified” the introductory essay
[9] The author notes in his foreword that for this third edition he has carefully revised the whole text “with a good number of minor additions and corrections”, added “over forty fresh sections dealing with diseases”, and “inserted several additional horoscopic diagrams”. Although the present edition is only eleven pages longer than the second, the text has also been reset, with fractionally more words per line on each page
[9a] Here credited as President Emeritus of the Astrological Lodge of London’; First Principal of the Faculty of Astrological Studies
[9b] After the original edition of 1924, second of 1926 and third of 1937, all of which see above
[10] This edition “published by arrangement with the Executors of the late C. E. O. Carter”. It would appear from the matching page count to be a materially unaltered reprint of the original edition, q. v. above
[11] A reprint of the above, with more cheaply-made, thinner card covers
[12] After the original edition, privately printed by the Author, of 1936, which seems to be very scarce. See an undated early edition under the title ‘Thirty-Four Objections…’ below
[12a] Stated printed in 2,000 copies, like both the original edition of May 1925 and the second (revised) edition of May, 1931. In his preface to the third edition, the author says he has made ‘a careful revision of the whole… certain alterations to the text and a few additions’ although ‘on the whole… the book remains unchanged’
[12b] A former owner’s signature is dated July 1987 so it cannot be later than this. This edition is completely reset from the original, in a modern, equal-spaced computer font, with much more text per page allowing for the page count of the original edition to be almost halved
[13] Library records indicate 1929
[13a] [Sic]
[13b] A series of astrological publications serially issued between 1977 and 1981 according to German library records, although reprints continued to appear as far as the early 1990s. This may be the first issue thus
[13c] Claimed to be a reprint of the Otto Wilhelm Barth Verlag edition of 1920, which is incorrect as not even the English first edition had been published before 1929, and library records show that in fact the Otto Barth translation was first published in 1938
[13d] No record of this edition under this title is found in COPAC or Worldcat. In this edition, the author gives his address as 81 Sutton Court Road, London, W.4; and the printer is identified as Bissley & Co., Printers, Adjoining Empire, Chiswick, a company that would appear to have been active in 1938 but also as early as 1895. The B.L. and National Library of Scotland records on COPAC record an edition privately printed in London in 1936 but with the title ‘Some objections to astrology stated and answered’, which is the title form of the later Astrological Association reprint, q. v. above. One can only reasonably deduce that either there were two variant early editions or the COPAC records have the wrong form of the first edition title.
[14] Apparently following an earlier revised edition of January 1964
[15] The first edition is believed to have been published in 1956 and is claimed by a bookseller listing to run to just 151 pages. The afterword at the end of the present (1970) edition refers to the authors having sold several thousand copies of this book.
[16] The sole exception is the presence of an additional short note in the middle of the blank facing leaf 25.
[17] Over this address has been pasted a separately printed strip reading ‘137, High Street, Watford’
