[1] After the original edition of 2006.
[1a] This is dated ‘March 2011; Revised September 2016’
[1b] However, this may be signed in print, since numerous other annotations in the same red ink have been made within the contents, and they are presumed those of the author, and in print
[1c] This scholarly study, written and annotated entirely in Latin, is restricted in its focus to the use of Latin conjunctions and similar parts of speech in the five books of Manilius, and does not concern itself with the astrological ideas in his work
[1d] At the time of publication, holder of the Chair of Classics at the University of Newcastle, N.S.W.
[1e] Internal evidence clearly indicates 1991
[1f] This is a later issue, as evidenced by the added note on p. 150 that Hans Niggemann died in 1985
[2] The date of the first edition is given as 1982
[3] A reprint from the 1934 original whose publisher is not identified here
[4] An earlier copyright date of 1915 is also given, and in the foreword the present printing is expressly stated as being the second edition. No 1915 edition could be located in online library records
[5] Comprises transcripts of sermons seemingly originally published serially on a weekly basis, from No. 24, August 19, 1831 to No. 46, January 20, 1832, each sermon being assigned 16 pages, and thus presumably edited or shaped to fit the available space in the original serial publication. Some of the sermons, such as No. 24, are specified as having been delivered on earlier dates (in that case, Feb. 11, 1830) than their dates of publication. This volume was a sequel to “The Devil’s Pulpit Vol. I”, of which the Ballantrae Reprint unfortunately is missing from this collection since another title was mistakenly supplied under its covers (see the Ballantrae Reprint of “A Plea for Urania” under Cooke, Christopher above) when it was ordered. The sermons in the present second volume cover a wide range of Bible interpretation topics, some of them making reference to the signs of the zodiac or the constellations
[6] A facsimile reprint, issued early-mid 2000s, of an early reprint published by W. Dugdale, 16, Holywell St., Strand, London, 1842, of the work first published in 1832 by Richard Carlile, London
[7] A translation of ’L’Astrologie, Science du XXIe siècle, q.v. below
[8] The full title as given within the book. The dj front cover adds a subtitle: “Postulat, Preuves, Perspectives”.
[9] The printing date from the imprimatur. The original copyright date is given as 1988 and credited to “Édition no 1″; this edition is said to have been published with the authorisation of “[les] Éditions no 1”. Whether the singular or plural form is correct is unclear in view of both being used.
[10] The text of Teissier’s doctoral thesis in sociology, approved by the Sorbonne in April 2001. Its subject is the paradoxical attitude of fascination and rejection evidenced by western society towards astrology
[10a] A German translation of the French original ‘Ne Brûlez Pas la Sorcière’ (1976), q. v.
[10b] After the first four editions dated September, October, November and December 1981, respectively, indicating that the book’s early sales far surpassed expectations
[11] The author’s thesis is that ancient practitioners of astrology employed twenty-two constellations beyond the ecliptic, which she refers to as “lost star signs”. She blames their loss on Ptolemy’s popularisation of tropical astrology
[12] Copyrighted 1975; and no further date is given, but the book is said to have been first published in the United Kingdom in 1995 by Chatto & Windus, Random House, 20 Vauxhall Bridge Road, London SW1V. It is not apparent whether or not this first U. S. edition was published in the same year.
[13] DNB records give 1967, supporting the reference of the title to the date of the conference on which the publication is based
[14] The pagination starts at 105 but the contents are complete. The pagination presumably refers back to pages in earlier issues from this series of publications, or else to a longer source in which the present publication was included alongside other works, perhaps by different authors
[14a] A collection of 11 historically focused essays by different scholars, mostly in English or French, with one in Italian
[15] A former senior lecturer in classics at Bristol University. He died shortly before this book was published
[16] Earlier paperback editions are dated to 1990 and 1999; and hardback editions to 1987, 1988 and 1990. The content appears unaltered from the 1987 first printing, q. v. above
