[1] Dated 1997; but it is unclear if this relates only to the original printing date
[2] Astrological tables span pp. 99-123; the commentary upon them pp. 324-334
[3] Expanded from Skinner’s earlier book entitled ‘Terrestrial Astrology: Divination by Geomancy’, as published by Routledge & Kegan Paul in 1980, which is therefore taken as the first edition despite the different title
[4] A facsimile reprint of the edition published in 1963 by the University of Wisconsin Press, 430 Stirling Court, Madison, after the 1804 first edition published by T. Gillet, London. This edition was catalogue-listed and sold by UMI Books on Demand under the misleading false title of “An Account of the Astrological Discoveries of Kepler’, which form appears on the spine as bound. The content is purely astronomical, and so too are the internal titles. It is nonetheless of interest to the broader concern of Kepler’s cosmology.
[4a] A separate copyright date of 2017 is also declared, this presumed to reflect the publication date of the last electronic versions of the component parts of this book, which is a compilation of seven previously separately issued electronic books
[5] The initial capital letters to both the forename of the recipient and the first place name following the surname are very hard to decipher and might be otherwise than assumed here
[6] Reproduced from ‘The Witness of the Stars’ by E. W. Bullinger, q. v., with permission, in common with the other plates in this volume, which are just a selection of those in Bullinger’s work
[7] Attributed to Smith at the time of publication by the A.F.A.; but this is manifestly untrue. Smith died on 23rd October, 1898. The text refers to Teddy Roosevelt having been “destroyed” by an aspect (p. 28), yet Roosevelt did not even enter office as Vice President until March 1901, over two years after Smith’s death, and was President from 1901 to 1909. Moreover, p. 13 refers to the day Roosevelt was ‘shot’, which was on October 14, 1912, proving that the text cannot predate this. A further reference (p. 33) is to the writings of Elinor Glyn, who did not begin writing until 1900, further disproves Smith’s authorship. On p. 29, the author refers to having started studying astrology only in 1901 (i.e. two years after Smith’s death) when a woman sent him / her various astrological books. The late James Herschel Holden (writing in his Biographical Dictionary of Western Astrologers) has attempted to date the text more precisely, as well as its author, and has proposed a date of 1915-1916 for its writing and a date of 7 March 1876 for the unknown author, based purely on internal evidence. This is further than my analysis has reached, but I have no doubt that he had good reasons for these deductions
[8] The first publication, circa 1970-1975, of a previously unpublished undated typescript
[9] This edition is clearly after 1975 as seen from the revised publisher’s address; estimated date is 1980s
[10] A conference programme
[11] A study of images found in several astrological manuscripts and books: El segundo lapidario of Escorial; a manuscript of Picatrix Latinus held in the Jagiellonian Library, Krakow; Astrolabium Planum of Johannes Angelus, as printed in 1488; a late 15th or early 16th century manuscript of Abu Ma’Shar’s Abbreviated Introduction to Astrology produced by Georgius Zaparus Zotorus Fendulus, held at the Bibliothèque Nationale; and a 16th century manuscript called Deutsche Sphaera by Konrad von Megenberg.
[11a] A study of the iconography of the signs of the zodiac and the constellations in the Munich manuscript of Abraham Ibn Ezra’s Principium Sapientiae (the Beginning of Wisdom). The manuscript is said to have been written in Prague at the end of the 14th or start of the 15th century, and to be based on the Latin translation of Ibn Ezra’s text by Pietro d’Abano. It was illustrated by two ‘illuminators’
[12] A study of the iconography of the signs of the zodiac and the constellations in illustrated medieval astrological manuscripts found in English, Australian, Czech, Polish, Slovakian, American and Hungarian collections, as well as that of the Warburg Institute
[12a] The title is translated to ‘ “A beautiful castle on the hill.….” Horoscopes – a forgotten historical source’ in the English-language summary at the end of this Polish-language volume. The present volume is essentially a study of a collection of horoscopes featured in thirteen manuscripts conserved at the Jagiellonian Library, with dates from 1398 to 1541. The main subjects are Polish royalty, nobility and clergy
[12b] A series of publications collectively edited at this time by Chia-Feng Chang, Michael Lackner, Klaus Herbers and Alexander Fidora
[12c] Professor of History at Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, Pennsylvania
[12d] A series of publications collectively edited by Henrik Bogdan of the University of Göteborg at this time
[13] A book issued exclusively to members of a book club called “Le Club de La Femme”. The copyright is credited to les Éditions Rombaldi – which I presume to be the parent company responsible for the Club de la Femme. The main focus of the book is on the Sun signs and to a lesser degree their decans and ruling planets. It was evidently designed as a heavily illustrated book for a non-technical astrological readership.
[14] A series of publications founded and directed by Marie-Madeleine Martin, each of them taking a first-person perspective on the author’s usual profession. Twenty previously published volumes in the series are listed in the advertising on the dj rear cover
[15] This is the year of the original printing. Since this is the stated ninth edition, it is presumed to be a considerably later reprint. Although the imprimatur agrees with the date on the title page, it is presumed to have been simply carried over from the original printing without alteration to save cost
