[1] The title is also given in German, as “Verzeichnis Astrologischer und Mythologischer Illustrierter Handschriften des Lateinischen Mittelalters III: Handschriften in Englischen Bibliotheken 1”
[1a] A compendium of 28 essays by the late scholar of the history of art Fritz Saxl, four of which are specifically concerned with astrology and cosmology: ‘Macrocosm and Microcosm in Mediaeval Pictures’; ‘The Revival of Late Antique Astrology’; ‘The Belief in Stars in the Twelfth Century’ and ‘The Villa Farnesina’
[1b] This volume comprises solely plates to illustrate the essays in the first volume. There are typically between one and four plates per page. 36 of the pages are dedicated to the four astrologically and cosmologically themed essays in Volume I.
[2] Bound with 2., 3., 4. and 5. Abhandlung from the same publication series (which are non-astrological): 2. ‘Das Seerecht von Oleron nach der Inkunabel Treguier (Paris, Bibliothèque nationale, Réserve, F, 2187: Diplomatischer Abdruck mit Einleitung, ergänzendem und einer Druckprobe von Heinrich Ludwig Zeller, Dr. jur. et phil.’ (1915); 3. ‘Das Völkerrecht der Zukunft von E. I. Becker in Heidelberg’ (1915); 4. ‘Eine babylonische Seisachthie aus dem Anfang der Kassitenzeit (Ende des XVIII. vorchristl. Jahrhunderts) von Moses Schorr in Lemberg’ (1915); 5. ‘Der Tod des großen Pan von G. A. Gerhar in Czernowitz’ (1915)
[3] The covers are marked only with a faint stamp to the upper margin of the front cover reading ‘1925/26 2. Abh.’ and a hand-pencilled title label to the spine. It is not clear if this was the original binding with which this publication was issued but the lack of printed title to the covers seems unusual for the time
[4] A monochrome facsimile reprint of an offprint from the original edition shown above. The offprint was released contemporaneously with the original edition, and itself bears the legend: ‘Reprinted from the “Transactions of the Society of Biblical Archaeology,” Vol. III, Part 1, 1874′
[4a] After the original edition published by Grafton Books, date unspecified
[4b] A directory, with detailed write-ups, of significant addresses in Berlin of interest to students of occultism and esotericism. A six-page chapter is dedicated to magicians, clairvoyants and astrologers
[4c] This would appear likely from library records to be a later printing of the original edition published by P. Brenet, Paris, in 1923, although there is evidence to suggest that Paul Brenet himself was the director of the present publisher, and the 1923 edition is recorded as having 308 pages. The dates of other publications by the present publisher range from 1914 to 1938
[5] An English translation of the author’s short polemic against the Committee for Scientific Investigation into Claims of the Paranormal, and defence of Dennis Rawlins, Wissenschaftsbetrug gegen die Astrologie: Kriminella in der amerikanischen Wissenschaftlerscene. The original German title is retained internally (without the English one), but the remaining contents have been fully translated into English. Included is a transcript of Rawlins’ report on his experiences with CSICOP (pp. 5-47), followed by Schendel’s commentary
[6] DNB gives 1948
[7] A pencilled note at the back gives 1978
[8] The printed publisher’s street address has been corrected by a stamp to: Wiesenstr. 171
[9] Not in German library records. Internal evidence suggests around 1927
[10] DNB gives 1930
