[11] The much lengthier page count of the 1897 edition than that of the first edition shown above is partly the result of the text having been reset with significantly fewer and shorter lines per page. But the text also has been significantly edited since the first edition of 1889 (shown above). The initial section on astrology spans pp. 4-128 in the 1897 edition compared with just 1-71 in the original one. Two paragraphs have been added to the chapter on directions and horary questions (pp. 112-113 of the 1897 edition). Some of the non-astrological sections of the book have evidently also been expanded.

The source edition bears the imprint “Kegan Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co., Ltd., Dryden House, Gerrard Street, Soho, London, 1904”. This copy bears the publisher’s website address to the copyright page, proving that it cannot predate 1994. In all probability it was either printed and bound up on demand, or issued from small recently printed stocks, at the time of purchase. For the purposes of this catalogue, to avoid duplication of text, I have used the simplified title presented by Health Research on the front cover, although the full original title page has been retained in facsimile within.
[12] The shorter page count of the fourth edition of 1904 edition compared with that of the third of 1897 would appear to reflect a number of cuts having been made to the text. The initial section on astrology spans pp. 4-124 in the 1904 edition compared with 4-128 in that of 1897. The original short Chapter VII, on the Part of Fortune and Dragon’s Head and Tail, has been cut out, together with all other references to the Part of Fortune in other chapters. Further, quite a few traditional terms have been removed from the chapter on the Explanation of Terms. The paragraph on indications of death occurring by violence on pp. 58-9 of the original edition has been cut out. One paragraph has been removed from the chapter on directions and horary questions. And yet, a whole new chapter XIII, Solar Horoscopes (pp. 103-119), has been added, sourced in the author’s translation of the work listed under Anonymous (21) above. These changes in content between the 1897 and 1904 editions are quite a revealing reflection of the popular direction of astrology in the intervening years. Other cuts have clearly also been made to the non-astrological sections of the work to account for the overall drop of 78 pages between editions
