Books on Hamburg School / Uranian Astrology in the Library

Hamburg School Astrology, commonly known in English as Uranian Astrology, is a school of modern astrological practice with a number of distinctive technical qualities, among which it is best known for its use of half sums or midpoints to generate ‘planetary pictures’, its joint representation of conjunctions, oppositions and squares as fourth-harmonic conjunctions on a 90-degree dial, and its usage of eight hypothetical planets or points.

From humble beginnings as the product of a grassroots movement of technical astrologers centred upon Hamburg in the early-mid 1920s, these methods gradually gained traction, and while their early practice was largely confined to German-speaking countries, they began to spread to the United States astrological community from 1939 thanks to Richard Svehla’s publication of his pioneering translation of an early edition of the foundational book Regelwerk für Planetenbilder (first published in the original German in 1928) as Uranian System of Astrology: Rules for Planetary Pictures that year, as well as to his related teaching activities and mammoth course of Correspondence Lessons in Uranian Astrology. Hans Niggemann was another American populariser in the 1950s and 1960s. Hamburg School Astrology has now been practised in one form or another for the best part of a century.

Following many years of collecting, the international astrology library now has quite a thorough range of books and journals of relevance in both the original German and English, although there are still some notable lacks. Below is a shortlist of what you can find on the topic here if you book a pre-arranged visit (historical researchers and astrologers with a genuine interest in the topic are equally welcome to make contact).

The typesetting and editing, however, are greatly improved, the individual entries being much clarified over the original edition, and the alphabetical order being rectified in places

[10] The copyright date of 1961 from the original edition is retained, but this appears to be a later edition. The comb binding was not normal for Niggemann in the 1960s, and both the title page and the following leaf, whereon the 500-copy limitation is declared, have the appearance of being of facsimile quality, whereas all later pages are laser-printed with what appears to be a computer font of the 1980s or 1990s, and coherently paginated, unlike the erratic typescript edition listed above, which is reasonably presumed earlier. It is ultimately unclear whether this was an official issue by Niggemann himself or an unauthorised later copy, but it does not appear to be the true 500-copy pilot edition in either case – see separate entry above

Part Two: Uranian Astrology Journals in the main library

In the late 20th century, there were two main journals dedicated to the techniques of the Hamburg School, of which one was published in German (the Hamburger Hefte) and one in English (Uranian Forum). Prior to the 1960s, there were no known journals dedicated to these techniques, but various articles by their proponents appeared in the general astrological press, especially in Germany. A compendium of Alfred Witte’s early magazine articles is found in the posthumous book credited to him Der Mensch, q. v. in the books section above. We may also have some of the original German magazines where they first appeared, but these have not yet been catalogued, and there will be gaps.

Below are detailed the holdings we have of the two main dedicated Uranian astrology journals.
