Books on Horary Astrology in the Library

In the 21st century, horary astrology has a wide interest among traditional astrologers in particular, although it continued to be written about in the first three quarters of the 20th century before the traditional astrology revival got underway in the 1980s. This sub-catalogue is based on searches for books in the main catalogue that contain words meaning ‘horary’ or ‘questions’ and that are clearly relevant to horary. Some general astrology books that include horary methods not mentioned in their titles will have been missed by this methodology. If there are any important titles you notice are missing here, please contact me with your suggestions.

[1] An annotated English translation, primarily from the twelfth century Latin translation of Hugo of Santalla, although also with reference to another twelfth century Latin translation by Robert of Ketton. Al-Kindi’s text was originally composed in Arabic in the ninth century

[2] With separate title-page at p. 185: “Blagrave’s Introduction to Astrology. The Second Part. Shewing The Manner and Use of ELections as they are constituted on the twelve Celestial Houses, with plain and familiar Instructions for chusing of times proper and convenient for the undertaking and performance of any business or matter whatsoever, according to the Author’s many years Practice and Experience” (same publication details but undated). With separate title-page at p. 219: “Blagrave’s Introduction to Astrology. The Third Part. Of Nativities. Shewing By New and Experienced Rules how to rectifie and judge a Nativity: also the natural signification and Portents of Directions; and how the time of any Accident or Alteration may be known, with plain and Familiar Examples thereupon. Also The true way of gaining the Revolutional Figure, and how to give judgment thereupon with the Significations and Use of Transits, and how the particular Accidents of each Day may be found’ (same publication details)

[3] The advertisements in this edition include two for works first published in 1922, strongly suggesting that it is a printing from then or soon afterwards. Although there is no edition number stated, it cannot be the first printing of the first edition, as that is dated to 1921 in German library records.

[4] After the first edition thus of 1921, according to German library records. The third edition is dated to 1925 and the original printing of the fifth (of which this is evidently an early reprint) to 1930. Records for the second and fourth editions were not found. To be compared with the author’s work on the same theme published in the Astrologische Bibliothek series in 1912 (q.v. below), of which a second edition is recorded in 1920, just a year before the first edition of the equivalent work in the present series. It is also notable, and surely not coincidental, that the Astrologisches Verlaugshaus replaced Karl Brandler-Pracht’s work in the Astrologische Bibliothek series with one by Rudolf von Sebottendorf entitled “Stunden- und Fragehoroskopie” (q. v.) in 1921, the same year that Brandler-Pracht launched the present title.

[5] German library records give 1912

With separate title page to p. 351: Coley, Henry, Philomat. “Clavis Astrologiae Elimata: Or a Key to the whole Art of Astrology New Fil’d and Polished. The Third Part. Containing The Genethliacal Part of Astrology. Exactly Performing, and briefly Comprehending the whole Doctrine of Directions; and Judgment of Nativities. [11b] Said to contain “substantial emendations” to the original Penguin / Arkana edition of 1994, including the addition of a new Chapter 13 “Images of the World” and the major reworking of the final chapter

[12]A retyped reprint of the original printed by J. Cottrel, for Ri. Moone and Steph. Chatfield; at the seven stars in Paul’s Church-yard, and in the middle of St. Dunstan’s Church-yard, London, 1654. Sue Ward is credited with the reytping

[13] The text appears unaltered from that of the 1st edition.

[14] COPAC gives 1980

[15] Copyrighted 1932, the date of the first printing

[16] Pseud. of Richard Gordon Hallett

[17] On the front cover and spine, the title is shortened to ‘L’Énigme des Heures Planétaires’

[18] Both copies are dated thus, but Copy B, which is internally unmarked, appears to be an undeclared later reprint

[19] A retitled modern partial edition of ‘Genethlialogia’, q. v. immediately below. The mis-spelling of what should be “Horary” in the title, as quoted in my entry for this edition, is as it has been rendered on the front cover. The only internal title page is a facsimile of that of the original edition. Otherwise, the text in this edition has been completely retyped by Claude St. Arroman. Tables from the earlier part of the original book are included in reduced monochrome facsimile, while 200 pages of tables in Part II have been excluded altogether. The publisher (believed to have been Peter Hill at this time) promises in his note to the present edition that they would be available separately as an appendix at a later date; but I am not aware of this ever having materialised. Not long after this edition was published in 2003, Ascella ceased to supply bookshops. It is consequently likely to be scarce

[20] With added title page to second part: ‘Primum Mobile: or, Astronomical Tables shewing the Declinations, Right Ascensions, Ascensional Differences, and Oblique Ascensions of All the Points of the Ecliptique, From One Degree, to Sixty, of Latitude. Together with Tables of The Circle of Position, serving for Nativities, In all parts of the world, where the Pole is elevated not above 60 Degrees. As Also, Tables for Calculating the Planets places, for any time, either Past, Present, or To come. Serving as a Second Part to The Doctrine of Nativities’ Printed by J. C. for William Larnar and Daniel White, London, 1658. With added title page to third part: ‘The Doctrine of Horary Questions, Astrologically Handled: Wherein are Propounded and Answered All necessary Questions Contingent to the Life of Man. Added by way of Apendix to the Treatise of Nativities Before going’ Printed by J. C. for William Larner, at the Blackmoors head neer Fleet bridge; and Daniel White, at the seven Stars in Paul’s Church-yard, 1658.

[21] The date of the original edition is given as 1960, with further reprints listed as having occurred in 1963, 1966, 1967, 1968 and 1969. The size of each printing is not stated.

[22] Retains the copyright date of 1960. In this edition, no intermediate printing dates are given

[23] After the first of 1977

[24] Not in Worldcat or the DNB. There is a copy at Freiburg for which only an estimated date is provided, being 1920.

[25]Worldcat, tentatively suggests 1970s or possibly late 1960s

[26] The foreword by the author is dated 24 octobre 2005. It would appear to have been carried across from the author’s earlier book on horary published in 2006, q. v. below. I have not yet cross-checked the contents of this book against the author’s earlier works on horary, but the present volume is notably much longer, and includes internal references as late as 2012 in the main text, so it cannot be simply a re-packaged edition of the 2006 book, although it seems likely to include most or all of its contents. The preface by Zoller, in French, is undated; and it is therefore not directly apparent to which edition of Labouré’s work it originally belonged

[27] As printed on the front board only – no edition is indicated within, but this evidently is the first. It is distinguished by its orange cloth binding

[28]  The preface is dated June, 1907. British libraries seemingly disagree on the date of publication, with Oxford supporting 1907, Cambridge tentatively proposing 1908, and others directly claiming 1908, though it is not clear in these cases for what edition. 1907 would seem most likely for this first edition in view of the date of the preface

[29] This would appear to be the true original second edition. After 1908; probably 1909

[30] In non-ribbed green cloth, plainer than the original second edition shown above. Evidently a later printing of the second edition than the above. The inserted advertising flyer in Copy A for O. H. W. Owen’s “The Primary Progressed Horoscope”, which was first published in 1935, would tend to date this copy to around 1935, at least at the time of its sale. It would seem that the volumes in Alan Leo’s Astrological Manuals series continued to be sold, and periodically reprinted, throughout the pre-war years

[31] “Retyped and annotated by Deborah Houlding”. Also, from the acknowledgements page: “acknowledgement must go to David McCann and David Plant, for their constant assistance and contributions to the footnotes and explanatory material”.

[32] After the first edition thus of Easter, 2004. Roell’s edition is reset in modern type (except for the prefatory pages, which are in facsimile form), with modernised spelling, and astrological charts in both facsimile and modernised format.

[33] A facsimile reprint (post-2000) of the original printed by John Raworth, for John Partridge, and to be sold at the Sun in Paul’s Church yard, London, 1644

[34] With separate title pages specific to the original book being translated to p. [1] of every separately paginated main section.

[35] Further credited with background research towards the final translation are Geneviève Bouillon and Patricia Depasse, said to have studied the English translations

[36] This is the copyright date given, but it is not clear if it applies to the current (first paperback) edition or the original limited hardcover one

[37] A compilation of 64 worked horary charts, each interpreted by one of six writers: Fotini Christodoulou, Leah Cuperman, John Frawley, Marcos Monteiro, Molly Morrissey, and Kathryn Silvestre

[38] Held further to this volume, but not separately listed because of the essentially identical content, is a Renaissance Astrology Facsimile Editions monochrome facsimile reprint with a collective series copyright date of 2005, in large-format card covers, with two pages of original content to each new page. The reprint lacks a full facsimile of the frontispiece portrait page present in the original book, although the pictorial highlights from it are shown in reduced size on the front cover

[39] With additional title page to p. 77: Partridge, John, Student in Astrology ‘Mikropanastron: Or the Vade Mecum Continued. Teaching how to Judge of all Nativities and Revolutions in a shorter Method than any hitherto have Performed it. According to the Doctrine of the Learned Cyprianus, Leovitius, Origanus, Bonatus, and others; being faithfully Collected and Translated from their Works, for the Use of the young Ingenious Student’ London, 1679. With additional title page to p. 233: Partridge, John, Student in Astrology ‘Mikropanastron: Or the Vade Mecum Continued:  Briefly Handling the Doctrine of Elections, with Experiments and Aphorisms thereunto belonging’ Printed for William Bromwich, at the Sign of the Three Bibles in Ludgate-Street, London, 1679.

[40] A chiefly retyped edition of another copy of the original work (q. v. above), internally retaining the original title page, some prefatory pages and some tables and chart figures in facsimile

[41] A previous owner’s inked ownership date of 1730 shows that this must be the original printing of 1726, albeit without the full dated title page and other prefatory leaves

[42] This copy was acquired from remants of the former library of Maurice Privat, via auction to a French bookseller. The volume is presumed to have been issued privately in small quantities, in the absence of any evidence of formal publication

[43] The final component work, by Privat himself, is dated 1940; the others are undated, and it is not clear in what order he undertook the translations as compared with his own work featured, but it seems a reasonable assumption that the overall volume was produced in the 1940s, and probably the early 1940s

[44] This translation has been supplemented by original content on Pluto by Privat, notably on the pages numbered 18a, 18b, 27a and 27b

[45] According to the translator, the original version of this treatise on horary astrology was composed in 1567. It is believed by some authorities to have formed the 3rd and final division of Neelakanta’s work Tojaka Neelakanteeya

[46] The translator’s introduction is signed August 1969

[47] A long list of his other publications follows

[48] However, the advertising matter at the back dates this binding to 1893, and it is notable that Foulsham did not yet exist in 1879, so even the title page is clearly misleadingly dated to match the original 1879 edition.

[49] It seems incongruous that publication had nominally reverted to the author by 1901, and yet there is a stamp immediately beneath the date on the front cover that reads ‘W. Foulsham & Co., Puiblishers, 4, Pilgrim St., London’.

[50] An enlarged facsimile reprint by L. & S. Trading, 2000s, of the 1901 edition shown above.

[51] A compilation of Dykes’ translations from the Arabic of ‘The Introduction’, ‘The Fifty Aphorisms’, ‘On Questions’, ‘The Book of Choices’, ‘On Times’, ‘On Nativities’, and ‘The 66 Sections’, together with a short anonymous work called ‘The Connections of the Lord of the Ascendant’ said to have been annexed to manuscripts of ‘On Nativities’, and suspected by Dykes as having been authored by Māshā’allāh

[52] It is conceivable that this early edition may originally have been issued in two volumes, in common with all the later editions of this work; but there is no direct evidence of this remaining if so, for it has been bound into a single library binding at some stage, with the loss of the original title page to Volume II if there was one. At p. 275, additional title page subtitled “Part the Second, Containing the Doctrine of Nativities, and the Art of Resolving Horary Questions; Together with a Collection of Nativities of the most eminent and remarkable Persons, Twins, Dwarfs, Giants, &c.”, dated 1784. At p. 915, additional title page subtitled “Part the Third, Containing the Meteorological Part of Uranology; with Certain Rules for prejudging the Revolutions of every Part of the habitable World. General Effects of Great Conjunctions, Eclipses, Comets, Blazing Stars, and other Extraordinary Phenomena: with the Art of Calculating Eclipses, Tides, and Weather, For any Number of Years to come. The Whole Illustrated by a Figure of the Sun’s Ingress into the Sign Aries; and by a Revolutional Figure of the Commencement of the American Empire”, dated 1790.  At p. 1057, additional title page subtitled “Part the Fourth. Containing the Distinction between Astrology, and the Wicked Practice of Exorcism. With a General Display of Witchcraft, Magic, and Divination, Founded upon the Existence of Spirits Good and Bad, and their Affinity with the Affairs of this World”, dated 1788

[53] The title page continues: “Part I. An Enquiry into, and Defence of, Astrology, with an interesting Discourse on Natural and Occult Philosophy – in which the Wisdom and Omnipotence of God; the intellectual Faculties of Angels, SPirits, and Men; the Order, Harmony, Sympathy, and wonderful Properties, of the Celestial and Terrestrial Worlds; the Signs, Influences, and Effects, of the Heavenly Bodies upon all animal, vegetable, and mineral, Substances; the Number of the Spheres; the Method of erecting the Horoscope to cast Nativities; and the Doctrine of Horary Questions; are clearly exemplified and explained. [53a] Still within the title page, and before the publisher details, this edition is then described thus: “Embellished with curious Cooper-Plates, which exhibit Representations of the Harmony and Construction of the World; – the secret Influences of the Heavenly Bodies communicating to Human Nature; and their Operation and Effect upon Man, in four Curious Prints. The apperance of Herbs and Flowers in full bloom, produced by a simple Spirit extracted from each Herb or Flower. Edward Kelly, in the Act of raising up the Ghost of a deceased Person in Walton Church-yard, in Lancashire. Plans and Prints of the exterior and interior of Magical Ricles, Implements, and Characters, used in exorcising or calling up Spirits or Ghosts. Portraits encircled with the Nativities of many extraordinary Personages; with a variety of other Plates equally interesting and valuable”

[54] A facsimile reprint, issued early 2000s, of the first half of the first of two original volumes of a later edition of the work above, bearing the imprint: “Printed for, and sold by, the Proprietor, at No. 17, Ave-Maria Lane, St. Paul’s, London, 1826”. The title page is noticeably vastly lengthened in terms of its text detail compared with the 1794-90 edition above. This first half of the first volume comprises Part the First of the original work

[55] A facsimile reprint, issued early 2000s, of the second half of the first volume of the later edition from which the four-part Ballantrae reprint of the whole work has been sourced. This second half of the first volume constitutes the first half of Part the Second in the work as a whole. The title page bears to this Part, here shown, bears a printing date of 1798. Part the Second continues in the first half of the second volume, q. v. below

[56] Appears to be the true first edition of this work, predating the undated edition that was printed in Leeds but published in London, although probably in the same year. Not held in any libraries listed on COPAC or Worldcat, but this is one of two copies I have seen for sale second-hand since 2005

[57] Presumed to be the second edition. Although undated, recorded by the British Library to have been issued in 1851 in common with the first edition shown above. If the British Library record is correct, that would make it the second overall edition

[58] Presumed to be the third edition after those of Israel Holdsworth and Simpkin, Marshall & Co., as shown above

[59] However, the unibind.com binding is clearly later than this, so this is presumed in fact to be an unaltered reprint from the late 1990s of the original AFA reprint edition. For the original Astro-Analytics edition, see above

[60] An early series of publications focused on English translations of ancient Indian astrological texts. This was the fourth volume to be released in the series, following the Brihat Samhita of Varaha Mihira (q.v.), the Brihat Jataka of Varaha Mihira (q.v. for a later reprint of the same translation) and a shorter work on horary (not in this collection)

[61] No publication date recorded in available Worldcat records, but presumed to date from the early 1930s. Over the original printed publisher credit to the title page has been pasted a label of D. G. Nelson, Publisher & Sales Agent, 619 N. State St., Chicago 10, Ill.

[62] The final 11 pages of text are a guide to horary astrology

[63] Presumed 1899 or early 1900

[64] Library records show 1820. This copy was bound up with the 1820 first edition of Wilson’s “New and Complete Set of Astrological Tables”, q. v. below

[65] Unless these sheets were the content of this issue, but they are unpaginated and that seems unlikely

[66] The fascicule itself is not dated, but the imprimatur gives a Dépôt Légal date of ‘2e trimestre 1956′
