Bohn in 1852, with later printings issued by George Bell & Sons. [2] + [pp. iii-xiv] + 292 + [2 folding plates] + [pp. 295-346] + [1 leaf] + [4] + [pp. 353-492] + [1 leaf] + [pp. iii-viii] + [pp. 9-64 of tables] + [2] + [pp. 3-10 of advertisements] + [2 pages of advertisements]. Complete thus | Original full red cloth in vgc for age, with 2 cm separation of cloth to top of front spine hinge, moderate fraying to cloth at extremities of spine, and wear to cloth over lower outer corners of boards; dark-staining to upper margin of front board and small parts of spine. Embossed Bohn’s Libraries emblem to front board still clearly legible. Gilt titling and emblem to spine remain intact and reasonably bright for their age. Minor chipping and tearing to outer and upper edges of leaf comprising pp. xi-xii as a result of careless opening by the original buyer. Slender chip lost from lower margin of leaf comprising pp. 23-24, with adjacent scuffing causing the ‘e’ of the word ‘the’ in the final line of text on p. 24 to be effaced, but it’s clear what the word should be. Binding slightly strained between pp. 192-3 and between pp. 482-3, but cords holding. No other faults, and no permanent previous owner markings, found. A couple of small plain-pencilled marks to lower margin of final leaf of advertisements; and plain-pencilled figures to rear free end-paper. For its age, an excellent copy in a very good state of conservation in its original binding, despite minor external blemishes |
