Description

2 hb set Al-Biruni; ed. / tr. Sachau, Dr. Edward Alberuni’s India: An account of the religion, philosophy, geography, chronology, astronomy, customs, laws and astrology of India about AD 1030 2nd Kegan, Paul, Trench, Trübner & Co. Ltd., London 1910 £225 After the original edition of 1888. Complete in [li] + 408 pp. [Vol. I] and [iv] + 431 pp. [Vol. II] Both volumes in original full brown cloth with matching richly gilt illustration and titling to front board, gilt titling to spine, and black border decorations. Bindings in excellent condition for their age, with light rubbing to extremities of spine and outer corners of boards, and small white ‘S’ marks added to each spine, else near-fine. Vol. II has small paper label to lower part of spine, which could probably be carefully removed with the right solvent. Both vols. with some foxing to endpapers, and with early former institutional library label, dated 1915, to front paste-down, and later barcode sticker, over which has been stamped ‘WITHDRAWN’, to upper margin of ffep. Page-edges rough-cut, as issued, resulting in very occasional minor short edge-tears, but these are rare. Very occasional tiny (2mm) printer’s ink stains or similar defects, usually marginal. Vol. 1 with green text-based library stamps and hand-inked markers alongside to rear paste-down; Vol. II has these instead on the verso of the rear free endpaper. Vol. I with charming vintage circular purple University library stamps to half-title page, title page (*2), blank upper margins of pp. vii, 9 and 17, and blank lower margins of pp. 49, 98, 159, 195, 242, 293, 358, 377, 399, 406 and 408 (the last touching printer address). Tiny 2mm printer’s ink stain to pp. 5-6, not affecting legibility of text. Vol. II has the charming vintage circular purple stamps to half title page, title page (*2), blank upper margins of pp. 1, 57, 123, 249 and 428, blank lower margins of pp. 148, 157, 196, 246, 402, 427 and 431 (barely touching printer name), and blank verso of final printed leaf. No other markings or significant faults found. An excellent ex-library set whose bindings are particularly well-conserved, with gilt still quite bright
