The typography on the cover is finer than on that of the second edition of 1909 that followed. Original full red cloth in good overall condition for age, with fraying of cloth to top and tail of spine backstrip and along parts of hinges, one repaired cross-tear to cloth over spine, wear to cloth over outer corners of boards, scattered staining to boards, and a slight forward lean. Inner front paper hinge slightly cracked but underlying binding still strong. Early owner’s fine inked signature, dated 1903, to ffep, along with a later plain-pencilled price. Old dark-inked underlining or marginal marks, probably in the same early owner’s hand, to parts of pp. 11, 25, 31-6, 39 (also bearing brief marginal annotations), 41, 61, 73, 79, 85, 95, 98-9, and 103-110. Half a line singly struck through in same ink to p. 54, but text still clearly legible. Plain-pencilled marginal mark to p. 71. Small accidental ink stain crossing a little text to p. 82, but text still decipherable through it. Very small marginal ink stain towards upper outer corner of p. 62, with light effects on previous and following leaves, far from text. Corrected dog-ears to upper outer corners of a few later leaves. 4mm tear to bottom edge of leaf comprising pp. 129-130, far from text. Overall, still a good, solidly bound and complete copy of the rare original edition. Price factors in faults
