Description

hb Sepharial Cosmic Symbolism: Being a Discussion and Exposition of some Recondite and Obscure Points in the Art of the Kabalists, the Mysteries of Sound, Form and Number, and the Basic Principles of Cosmic Symbolism 1st William Rider & Son, Limited, 8 Paternoster Row, E.C., London 1912 £300 Complete in 294 pages + 2 pages of advertisements. There were multiple issues of this first edition, with variant uses of gilt to the bindings and variant numbers of advertisements Original full blue cloth in vgc, with pale blue compartmental panelling to front board and spine; bright gilt titling and stars to front board; gilt titling to spine; and blind-stamped cosmic illustrations to front board and spine. Book strongly and fairly squarely bound, with a minimal forward lean if you look closely, but no tears to cloth. Moderate rubbing to parts of extremities of spine and to outer corners of boards. Crease to cloth across upper outer margin of rear board, which shows through to the rear paste-down, else near-fine for age. Page-edges toned and rough-cut, as issued, with very occasional unevenness to page-edges as is typical of such a cut. The interior is almost entirely free from previous owners’ markings. The diagram at foot of p. 146 has been labelled in blue ink with the days of the week (mostly abbreviated) that correspond with the planetary glyphs shown. No other deliberate markings found. Small pale stain to part of inner margin of p. 245, not reaching text. Very occasional other minor marginal stains, but nothing significant. 3mm tear to top edge of leaf comprising pp. 117-118. Inner paper hinge between pp. 144 and 145 looks slightly strained but holding. Mild diagonal straight-line creases across lower outer margins of pp. 255-8 and upper outer corner of leaf comprising pp. 261-2. Upper outer corners of leaves comprising pp. 265-8 slightly torn (far from text). A very good antiquarian original of this rare book.
