Ebertin, Dr. Baldur – see also under Ebertin, Reinhold, below
[1] A facsimile reprint, issued early 2000s, of the original edition above, albeit with all references to the original publication details removed
[2] Original card front cover carries the additional subtitle ‘A Practical Exposition of the Principles of Astrological Biology’, not present on the inner title page
[3] Translated from the original French edition of 1910 that was entitled “Traité pratique de médecine astrale et de thérapeutique” and ran to just 180 pages. The increased page count in the English edition is presumed to result from its use of shorter and fewer lines of text rather than from any enlargement of contents
[4] This date is taken from the author’s dedication page, in which he dedicates this English edition of his book to the National Astrological Society of the U. S. A.. The title page is undated, but the date of the original French edition was 1910 and the 1912 date therefore cannot refer to this
[5] A compendium of the translator’s English translations of numerous excerpts from chiefly medieval astrological works, arranged by theme into four main parts: Weather; Prices & Commodities; Eclipses & Comets; and Chorography and Climes. The authors include Ptolemy, Al-Kindi, ‘Umar al-Tabari, Masha’allah, Jirjis, Al-Rijal, Ibn Labban, Jafar, Hermann of Carinthia, John of Spain, Robert Grosseteste, Dorotheus, Abu Ma’Shar, Ibn Ezra, Al-Qabisi, Sahl, Shadhan, Bonatti, and Al-Biruni
[6] This second volume in the series begins with a lengthy introduction by Dykes, before moving to his translations of the excerpts and longer texts shown in the order given
[7] Translated chiefly from the 12th century manuscript Vienna 2428, with reference to the 13th century manuscript Madrid 10,009 and the 1509 printed edition by Peter Liechenstein. The Book of the Nine Judges is said to be an early-mid 12th century Latin compilation by Hugo of Santalla of his own translations from the Arabic of writings by Al-Kindi, Umar al-Tabari, Sahl Ibn Bishr, Abu Ali al-Khayyat, Masha’Allah, Abu Ma’Shar, and three unclearly identified writers referred to loosely as “Dorotheus”, “Aristotle” and “Jirjis”. The contents are grouped by astrological theme, with the opinion of each writer who has expressed one being given together.
[8] This work begins with Dykes’ own substantial introduction, before moving on to the excerpts and more substantial texts listed in the order shown
[9] Essentially a combined English translation, presented in order of astrological topic and not as discrete works, of Abu Ma’Shar’s Abbreviation of the Introduction to Astrology (from the 12th century Latin version of Adelard of Bath) and Al-Qabisi’s Introduction to Astrology (from the Latin version of John of Spain). Also selectively included alongside many of these translations for each relevant astrological topic are further English translations of select excerpts from Abu Ma’Shar’s Great Introduction (from the Latin version produced by John of Spain in 1133) and several other relevant sources such as Ibn Ezra’s The Beginning of Wisdom
[10] Internally consists of translations of the Liber Aristotilis, a work by Masha’allah translated into Latin in the early 1140s by Hugo of Santalla; and On the Judgments of Nativities by Abu Ali al-Khayyat. The translation of the Book of Aristotle is from Charles Burnett’s and Daid Pingree’s critical edition of 1997. The translation of Abu Ali is based on a 1549 printing of a Latin translation made by John of Seville in 1153 from the Arabic original.
[11] Internally consists of translations of the Three Books on Nativities by the astrologer better known in the west as Omar of Tiberias, comprising pp. [1]-78, and Abu Bakr’s On Nativities, comprising pp. [79]-333. Dykes does not indicate the source used for his translation of Omar, but specifies that his translation of Abu Bakr used two Latin sources: a printed edition of 1540 and a manuscript held at the Biblioteka Jagiellonska in Krakow, Poland. He notes that the Polish manuscript was more complete in various places.
[12] Translated into English from a Latin edition said to have been produced around 1262 from an incomplete late 10th century Greek translation of the Arabic original
[13] His name appears simply thus on the title page of this volume, although in the fuller form of “Benjamin N. Dykes Ph.D.” on the copyright page
[14] A series of publications edited by B. Arps, M. C. Ricklefs and D. K. Wyatt
[15] Styled “Dr. Eade” on the dj front flap, where he (I presume, though this is not clear) is described as “Research Officer at the Humanities Research Centre of the Australian National University”
[16] All the full-page illustrations in this book are on plain paper but I have referred to them as ‘plates’ because many are photographic reproductions and they serve the same function as plates despite the lack of plate paper.
[16a] Believed probably early-mid 2010s in view of existing reference to the present title in the author’s 2015 title ‘Psychological Astrology and the Twelve Houses’ as listed below
[17] DNB records indicate 1978
[17a] Presumed a later edition of the undated volume above in view of the page numbering to section D having been corrected always to include the letter D, and in view of the more modern print style on the binder
[18] The second volume in a three-volume set
[19] DNB records appear to indicate 1983
[20] There is no separate title page to the second volume in this edition, but the folder printing is consistent with the first volume of the 1984 edition shown above, and it came from the same source as part of a full set, so it is presumed to be from the same edition. It is also assumed to be a later printing than that of the equivalent volume in the addition shown immediately above, in view of the page numbering to sections E and F having been corrected always to include the letter E and almost always the letter F in the respective sections as appropriate, and in view of the more modern print style on the binder
[21] There is no separate title page to the third volume in this edition, but the folder printing is consistent with the first volume of the 1984 edition shown above, and it came from the same source as part of a full set, so it is presumed to be from the same edition
