Canyon, Justine ‘The Venus Return: Predictive Astrology for Love & Enjoyment’ Lapis Lucera Press, No Place Stated, 2012
[1] The prefix to the title on the half-title page. Presumed to represent a series of publications.
[2] This book consists of two separate works by Calvin and one about him, as shown in the full title. The first work, “Warning against Astrology”, fills the first 35 pages only.
[2a] There are no library records for this, the presumed first edition, which was followed by one of 1943 (q. v. below). A reference to the recent discovery of Pluto in a footnote to p. 11 shows that it cannot predate 1930; and it seems most likely to date from the early-mid 1930s.
[2b] Over the original publication details has been pasted a revised address label of Desert Hot Springs, Riverside Co., Calif.; it is presumed that the author had moved there before this copy was sold
[3] An account of some Indian astrological concepts
[4] After the first of 1984
[4a] A series of publications directed by Mario dal Pra from the Università degli Studi di Milano
[4b] Copyrighted 1976
[5] These are the first fourteen pages of the separately paginated Liber Septimus, which was misbound at the front of this volume, and lacks its final eight pages, normally numbered 17-24. The Liber Septimus is sometimes referred to as the ‘false seventh book’ and was an afterthought to Campanella’s work, whose sixth component book, supposedly the last, ends with ‘FINIS’; but the Liber Septimus is believed to have been bound in with most copies published, if not all, so the absence of the last eight pages of it on this copy appears to be a binder’s error.
[6] An adaptation of the author’s Ph.D. thesis awarded at the University of the West of England in 2004
[7] The only volume in the series to be issued with a dust jacket, and the last to be issued in a cloth binding in its first edition
[8] A compilation of nine papers presented at the conference described, by scholars including Helen Jacobus, Martin Gasten, Mark Williams, Jane Ridder-Patrick and Frances Clynes
[8a] A compendium of 31 papers by different scholars, divided into four groups entitled ‘Heavenly Discourses’, ‘Discourses in Words’, ‘Discourses in Sound’ and ‘Discourses in Images’. They are preceded by the exhibition programme from the original conference, succinctly introduced by Darrelyn Gunzburg, and a 24-page introductory essay by Nicholas Campion.
[9] No dust jacket was issued, although the book seems to have been designed in a style matching that of Volume I of the same series, q. v. above, with one in mind.
[10] The copyright is credited instead to Roxby General Books Limited, a division of Roxby Press Limited, 98 Clapham Common North Side, London SW4, in the same year. This firm is said to have “created” the book, and yet seemingly did not publish it.
[10a] Stated ‘first published 2000’ with no other date given. A hardback edition was published in 2000 by the same publisher, raising the possibility that this first paperback printing may have arisen a year or two later
[11] A collection of essays based on lectures presented at two conferences organised by the Sophia Centre in Bath in 2005: “The Alchemical Sky” (May 1) and “Sky and Psyche” (July 1-2). In all, twelve papers are included, by authors inclued Liz Greene, James Hillman, Bernadette Brady, Cherry Gilchrist, Robert Hand, Richard Tarnas, and Angela Voss
[12] A compendium of fifteen papers presented at the conference described, by different scholars including Angela Voss, Prudence Jones, Pat Harris, Liz Greene, offrey Cornelius, Joanna Komorowska, Derek Walters, Mike Harding and Jacques Halbronn
[12a] A series of thirteen papers presentationally refined from the transcripts of a selection of those presented at the 2012 Sophia Centre conference held in Bath, which had the same name as the title of this book. The contributing authors include David W. Pankenier, Liana Saif, Helen Jacobus, Micah Ross, and Dorian Greenbaum, among others
[13] A collection of eleven lecture papers, first presented at the conference named, by different scholars including Darrelyn Gunzberg, Jennifer Zahrt and the editors. The papers are grouped into three sections: “The Nature of Symbols”; “Ancient, Medieval and Early Modern Expressions” and “Celestial Symbolism in the Contemporary World”
[13a] A compilation of 9 papers originally presented at the 2015 Sophia Centre conference entitled ‘Astrology as Art: Representation and Practice’ and subsequently edited for this volume
[13b] Despite the ‘First Printing’ indication, this is a print-on-demand book, with this copy produced by Lightning Source in early 2020
[14] A collection of publications directed by Luigi Balsamo
